In Greek mythology, the Old Man of the Sea (Ancient Greek: ἅλιος γέρων, "halios geron") is a primordial sea deity embodying the sea's wisdom, prophecy, and shape-shifting nature. He is most commonly identified as Nereus (the gentle and truthful one) or Proteus (the prophetic herdsman of seals), but also linked to figures like Phorcys, Glaucus, or Triton.

Nereus: Son of Pontus and Gaia, father of the 50 Nereids (including Thetis, mother of Achilles). Known for his kindness, honesty, and prophetic abilities.
Proteus: Servant of Poseidon, famous for changing forms to avoid answering questions (as in Homer's Odyssey, where Menelaus wrestles him for advice).

A "geron" (γέρων) is a Greek word for an old man, often signifying an elder, senator, or wise person.

Means "old man" or "elder," forming the basis for words like "geriatric" and related to "senate" in Sparta.
