Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית) "In the Beginning"
Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית) meaning "In the Beginning" is the opening phrase in the bible.
Bereshit" is the Hebrew word for "in the beginning" and can refer to either the first word of the Book of Genesis or the first weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish reading cycle.
As the start of the Torah, this portion recounts the creation of the world, the first days of creation, Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden, and the story of Cain and Abel.
It marks the start of the annual cycle on Shabbat Bereishit, the Shabbat following Simchat Torah.
