The Pillars of Heracles (Place)

The Pillars of Heracles (Place)

Gibraltar As A Pillar Began in 400 BC 500 YEAR After the Pillars of Hiero Cles

The first mentions of Gibraltar as a pillar of Hercules appear in ancient Greek and Roman sources, such as the philosopher Plato around 400 BC and Roman writers like Pliny the Elder and Seneca. In these accounts, the Rock of Gibraltar (then known as Mons Calpe) was considered one of the two legendary Pillars of Hercules, along with a mountain on the African side of the Strait of Gibraltar, to mark the edge of the known world.
